It was a match that put anyone watching through the emotional wringer today. Hall Green United took a two goal first half lead before a long range shot from Charlie Yates halved the deficit. Sixty seconds later it was 3-1 after the league leaders converted from the penalty spot.
The second half saw a much more forceful Rangers take to the pitch and they asked plenty of questions of Hall Green. Luke Dubery & Danny Grannon scored, but Hall Green also added two against the run of play to take the points in an eight goal thriller!
Following the game, Manager Dan Marshall spoke to Media Officer Pete Arnett. This is what he had to say.
On the match …
We were poor in the first half, we lacked desire and responsibility and we didn’t match their work ethic and you could argue that’s what has lost us the game in the end. We changed the shape for the second half and played really, really well. We forced Hall Green back for long periods, we asked questions of them and stopped them from playing their game and they had to deal with us! Yes, we got a 2-2 out of the second half, but you can’t come here and give them two goal leads.
On Hall Green United and formations …
When they came to us before Christmas, they played two wingers high up the pitch and we were very conscious of their captain who ran the game from the centre of the pitch, but because of an injury, he went up front today and we had to deal with that. We had a game plan first half that we didn’t execute, but second half we changed the shape and went like for like. Playing off the cuff probably helped us in our decisions, and it showed on the pitch. We need to react a bit more sometimes, like for their fifth goal Jonty (Smith) has made two superb saves from close range, but they got the third rebound. We had a look at a few things today and got some positives to take away from it as well as things to work on.
On Luke Dubery …
Luke is one of those players who can play down the spine of the team. He likes to play higher up the pitch, but he’s so good at the back and in respect, he’s like Milky (Joe Wilks), both of them are so good with the ball at their feet and starting attacks with their range of passing. With some of the injuries that we have had, we had to ask Dubes to play at centre-half and he has been outstanding there. He brings desire and character to the team and today he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side and was our outstanding player and he scored a great goal.
