Fifty-three years ago, Rangers put on a superb footballing display and recorded a 12 – 1 win over Ripon City Reserves in a Harrogate & District Division Two match at Mallorie Park.
The result saw us nearly equal our highest score, which was set on the 23rd October 1948, when we beat Hampsthwaite United 12 – 0 at Lime Kiln Lane.
The local paper published a small report on the Ripon match:
Shooting Practice For Rangers.
“Rangers had a field day against a City side which had little to offer. They were 3-0 up in ten minutes and this set the pattern. Rangers did as they pleased, using the City goal for shooting practice. Although City pulled one back late on, it just didn’t matter.
Phil Thrower helped himself to five goals, and hat-tricks by John Poulter and Bob Greener and a goal by Ernie Huck completed the scoring. It could have been more but for a great display by City’s keeper.”
