Report: Sherburn White Rose 1 v 1 Rangers

A mixture of First and Second team players took to the sun-drenched pitch at Finkle Hill as Rangers faced Sherburn White Rose in their first pre-season match.

Featuring several new faces in Javaughn Fenton, Ethan McPherson, and Dom Jones, it wasn't long before Deighton attacked when Jack Abbott hooked the ball into the area, but Stevie Delaney couldn't get his shot away in time.

Sherburn countered down the left-wing, and goalkeeper Kieran Arnett collected a long throw that came into Deighton's area.

A long pass picked out James Harrison, but Sherburn's defence quickly closed him down, and a good tackle robbed him of the ball. A few moments later, Rob Holliday's free-kick rebounded into Liam Dean's pass, and his shot beat the keeper but bounced just wide of the post.

Another quick foray down Deighton's right saw their striker free up some space for a shot, but he caught it too well and lifted it over the crossbar.

Harrison received another long pass. Setting up Fenton, the Monserrat international dribbled past two opponents but couldn't shoot at the crucial time.

The game was moving well, and another surging run into Deighton's half was ended by McPherson when he produced a powerful block to dispossess the Sherburn player.

Sherburn's keeper produced the first of three superb saves when Harrison's pass found Harvey Ribbons, and his curling shot was pushed over the crossbar by the custodian.

Rangers were starting to increase the number of chances, with Fenton seeing a shot blocked and Dan Flynn shooting wide from the edge of the area.

A free-kick to the hosts just outside the area saw Arnett dive to his right to push the ball clear of the goal.

The first goal of the Pre-Season arrived in the 41st minute, and, in all fairness, it was a pretty good one as Liam Dean found Max Bladen, and he looped his shot over the stranded keeper from outside the area.

Aiden Dubery nearly made it 2-0 a minute later, but his shot deflected off the foot of a Sherburn player, and the keeper just managed to readjust his position and push it wide of the post.

Straight away, Deighton attacked, but Bladen was offside when Aiden Dubery passed to him. Seconds later, he was free again, but the keeper rushed off his line and knocked the ball away.

The chances kept coming, and Bladen turned and shot just wide after Sid Abbott did well to pick him out. Dom James was next to try his luck, but his shot from the edge of the area went wide.

Deighton pegged Sherburn back, and Bladen set Delaney running through the middle. Trying to slip Sid Abbott through, the play was pulled back as Abbott was called offside, much to Rangers' Managements annoyance.

Following a mid-half water break, the game restarted. A quick throw-in found the Sherburn player whose shot was turned onto the post by Arnett. However, the ball bounced back across the face of the goal, and despite Arnett and Luke Dudery trying to get there, it fell to a Sherburn player who scored to bring the game level.

Deighton almost produced an instant response after Flynn's free-kick was fumbled by the keeper into Sid Abbott's path. His shot beat the custodian but hit the post and bounced to safety.

Miscommunication between Arnett and Dubery allowed a Sherburn player to nip in and try his luck, but he pulled his shot wide of the goal with both players pressuring him.

Rangers had the ball in the back of the net in the 80th minute when Luke Dubery forced home from a corner, but the referee deemed that he had used his hand to score, a decision that did not go down well with the Deighton contingent.

The chances were stacking up again for Rangers, and Jones and Harrison came close to restoring the lead, as did Dean, who was just beaten to Rob Holliday's inswinging corner by the keeper.

With the clock ticking down, a long goal kick from Arnett was knocked into Harrison's path, and not for the first time; the keeper dived to his left to palm the ball away.

We wish Sherburn White Rose all the best for the forthcoming season.
