The Dugout Reaction!

Rangers started their League Cup campaign in emphatic style beating League Two Leaders Overthorpe Sports Club 9-2.

Goals came from Charlie Yates with a brace, Luke Dubery with a contender for goal of the season, James Woodward and Rob Holliday scoring their first of the season, Jack Holliday notched his first goal for the senior team whilst Josh Bhandal curled in a beauty of a free-kick. Josh Barden got his first of the campaign with a 70-yard pass that bobbled over the keeper’s foot (but they all count) before youngster Chris Plews finished the scoring with a close-range finish!

After the game, Media Officer Pete Arnett caught up with a buoyant Manager Dan Marshall and asked him about his feelings about the game. Here is what he had to say.

A good game and some great goals!

"Most definitely, we started well today and to be five up within about eighteen minutes showed the intensity and quality that we played with. I do have to say, full credit to Overthorpe, who never stopped, always asked questions and I can see why they are top of their league.

I think that the most pleasing thing for me was not the fact that we ran out 9-2 winners, but more so that we had eight different goalscorers and that the goals came from everywhere on the pitch."

Does that fact inspire the team, that we scored from multiple areas?

"Yes definitely. We’ve won our last two games 1-0, and in those matches, we’ve had to be patient, so to be able to score some great goals and have a lot of goalscorers will help the team in many ways. We’ve only come here really with thirteen players and although we were going to shuffle the pack a little, changes have had to be made due to absences, but the lads that have come in have done exceptionally well.

Going forward, this kind of performance does give me a headache, but it’s one that I want as we want competition for places and we have a squad of about 18 or 19, who are all knocking on the door."

What is your stance on cup competitions and their priority?

"The league has to be the priority and I think that most Managers would say the same, however we would like a good cup run. We are in three cups and we want to have a run in as many as possible. We have the squad and we can rotate players so yeah; we want to progress as far as we can. The best sides compete on multiple fronts, and we are looking to be in that group."
