Report: Rangers (ST) 0 v 4 Boroughbridge AFC Reserves

“It’s not the end of the world, and we were beaten by a very good Boroughbridge side!” was Manager Kris Macdonald’s verdict, following this 4-0 defeat.

In all honesty, the visitors were well worth the win, playing some good attacking football. Rangers will have learnt plenty of lessons from this to take forward into other games.

The match was only a few minutes old when Boroughbridge won a free-kick which was overhit and landed behind the goal.

No sooner had the game restarted, another stoppage occurred as Ben Challenger suffered a facial injury that needed attention. Ultimately he was unable to continue and was replaced by Sean Dawson.

On eight minutes, Boroughbridge scored after a free-kick had been headed home via the inside of the post.

Rangers tried to respond, and a ball over the visitor’s defence nearly released Liam Dean, but the goalkeeper was too quick for him.

Bridge’s attacking play was pinning Rangers back, but a break down the left saw Joe Straker pick out Brad Spencer, but he put too much power into his cross.

It was 2-0 on the 22nd minute after some quick passing had opened up Deighton on the left and the striker steered his shot past Mitch Moore.

Five minutes later, it was game over after Moore had brought down a Boroughbridge player, earning himself a yellow card and the visitors a penalty, which they converted.

Again Rangers tried to reduce the deficit, and some good work from Phil Turner and Dawson allowed Dean to fire over from distance.

Bridge resumed their attacking play and shot just wide following a promising move covering both flanks.

Another injury, this time to Straker, saw Rangers reshuffle their pack again as James Woodward entered the fray.

The final action belonged to Rangers as they forced a corner from Spencer’s cross. As the corner came in, Boroughbridge headed clear.

Following a half time hair-dryer treatment, Rangers came out on the attack. However, despite pushing Boroughbridge back, they couldn't fashion a clear cut chance.

The tide turned back into Boroughbridge's favour, and it took a superb sliding intervention from Connor Weal to deflect a fierce shot wide.

Bridge added insult to injury in the 65th minute when they scored their fourth. A long ball beat Deighton's defence, and a quick sideways pass allowed the free striker to beat Moore from close range.

Substitute Jack Holliday produced a burst of pace to pass his man and deliver a cross that Jack Loudoun headed over.

Maybe the footballing Gods were feeling sorry for us, as in quick succession, the post and crossbar came to our rescue as Boroughbridge piled on the pressure.

A break down the left saw Kieran Arnett, who had replaced Loudoun, latch onto a weak pass. However, as he shot, a defender deflected the ball.

A free-kick just outside Deighton's area following a foul saw Boroughbridge try and add a fifth, but Moore dived full length to push the shot wide.

Rangers ended the game on the attack, and Arnett's free-kick was flicked on by Dawson to Jack Abbott. Scrambling to try and get a shot away, he was closed down by the defence, and the ball was cleared.
